Oxford Ladies top at Christmas

15th December 2007

Oxford beat Whitchurch to stay top

The weather conditions were always going to make this a scrappy game, with the pitch only just past playable.

Oxford started well scoring inside the first five minutes with a barn-storming run from outside centre Kate Warner setting up Emilie Astley-Arlington for the first try, which was unconverted.

The next period of play was evenly balanced, with a lot of handling errors preventing either side gaining momentum. Oxford managed to break the deadlock with the ball going out along the back line to inside centre Carolyn Gray who burst through the line and then around the full back to score under the posts, converted by Alice Massey.

Whitchurch came back strong before the break with a powerful maul getting them over the line to make the half-time score 12-5.

In the second half the weather turned for the worse and so did the standard of play. Whitchurch pinned Oxford in their own half with a well executed kicking game. The only score was when Oxford made a rare foray into the Whitchurch twenty-two and Warner completed a good performance with a try, converted by Massey.

The final score of 17-5 was a good reflection of the game, with defensives on top throughout. It leaves Oxford top of the league over Christmas.
